learning together: AOY3 // AOY0 {week 4}

ok, i know i just got started posting these weekly school roundups and i already skipped one week.  i have no good excuse except that life happens.  on the plus side, there's not really a whole lot you'd miss in one week.  we try to stick to a routine, and these weekly roundups are really for my records so i know these posts aren't very exciting to read.

maybe one of these days i'll write a nice narrative about our typical week of learning.  one of these days...

EMMA

history (books in brackets):

emma read about france explorers who sailed to the new world, and settled for a little while in florida [this country of ours].  this was an interesting read, particularly because the topic of cannibalism came up at the end of the reading (don't worry, it wasn't graphic).  the french explorers who had settled in florida pretty much didn't want to hang out there anymore (because their captain never returned as he had promised), so they decided to build their own boat to sail back to france.  you can guess how well that turned out...and out of desperation they drew straws to see who would be, umm, dinner.

and then there was king henry and his 6 wives [our island story].  she did very well on her narration, and we had some good discussions on king henry's character. emma was not overly impressed by king henry's choices from this section of reading, and thought he was kind of a selfish guy.

natural history/science:

emma read chapter 4 in Pagoo, and i had her list 4 facts about a hermit crab that she learned from her reading.  she loves that book, so that comprehension activity was pretty easy for her.  but i love that she's excited about her school books, and that she's read the whole thing through already yet is willing to re-read it a little bit at a time for school.

language arts:

i ordered a print practice and cursive practice book for emma through handwriting without tears.  i decided to order the 2nd grade print book for her as a quick refresher course on print writing.  we're breezing through it (she even likes to do extra pages), so we'll be starting cursive soon enough!

emma's been alternating between doing the HWT print book and copywork from her copywork notebook.  her print writing has actually improved just from a few weeks of doing the HWT book.

this year, i doubled the number of spelling words emma has each week.  we are on the second week of spelling, and still using mcguffey's eclectic spelling book to source the weekly word list.  this weeks words are belt, deer, dear, whine, wine, quite, quiet, bear, bare, beer.  we discussed the "qu" sounds, letters that make the long e and the long i sounds, and rule-breaker words for the long e sounds (a.k.a. jail words).

math:

emma did a couple more chapters from her life of fred book, and i two worksheets from homeschoolmath.net focusing on solving for missing addends and place values (larger numbers).

poetry and literature:

we have been lagging in our daily poem readings.  i suppose i can just have emma read one to herself, but i do enjoy reading it to her.  plus, they're pretty short, and reading them together gives us an opportunity to discuss the poem together afterwards.

she read about pecos bill from her american tall tales book.  i had her tell me 5 questions she would ask pecos bill if she were to interview him.  i wish i had written down the questions, because they were pretty creative, and showed that she understood the reading well.  she also went on and narrated many parts of the story...i think she enjoyed learning about pecos bill.

she read chapters 10 and 11 for the week in The Princess And The Goblin.  she was looking forward to reading more, but we had a pretty busy week so there didn't end up being enough time to read ahead.

she read the mechant of venice from the book Tales From Shakespeare.  she narrated pretty well, but had difficulty remembering everything that happened.  the story was pretty long, and i should have had her spread it out over a few days.  that would have made more sense, and she would have retained more of the reading that way.  oh well.  next time!

ballet (p.e./performing arts):

things are going well, from what emma has told me, and she's halfway done with her 7 week session.  the studio is on the upper level, so there isn't really any space for parents to watch, and i don't think they really like parents peeking either.  i don't blame them.  i usually didn't care for having parents watch during class time, because it can get distracting for the students.  according to emma's latest class update, they practiced tendus, and "ballet" skips (a.k.a. skipping with pointed feet).  she has made a sweet little friend in class, and i'm hoping that they can stay in the same class for the new session.

GIBSON

so, our printer head for the black ink is a little mucked up, and i couldn't print out the sheets to make his letter of the week notebook page.  booo.

fortunately, that didn't hold us back.  gibson continued a few more pages in his HWT print book.  like emma, he is really enjoying doing his handwriting practice.  the HWT books are different from the typical handwriting books i've seen, and the kids love it.

we also did a little math.  nothing big, just adding some numbers with 10 as the highest sum.  gibson started adding numbers before he could write them, and i came across the best idea online (i wish i could remember which blog it was i saw it on) to encourage kids who can add, but haven't quite mastered writing them yet.  i use little round stickers with the answer to individual addition problems written in each sticker.  all gibson has to do is find the correct number that matches the answer to the addition problem and stick in the blank.  that way, they're not slowed down (or discouraged) by their lack of mastery in writing the numbers.  it's a pretty brilliant idea.

CASH and LANI

these two babies are going to end up starting school at the same time.  they do well playing on their own most days, and sometimes they'll want to join in with big brother and sister so they'll pull out some papers to draw or a coloring book to color in.

lani thinks she can use scissors, so she sneaks in my room and digs around in the school supply box until she can find the scissors to cut things.  so far, she's been trying to cut just paper.  i'm hoping that's as far as she goes right now, and doesn't move on to cutting hair!

ALL KIDS

bible:

this week, we read from Luke 2:1-40, Exodus 2:11-16, Acts 7:23-34, and Hebrews 11:24-28.

our memory verse for the week was Genesis 2:7, and since we're using this system for scripture memorization we also review memory verses from previous weeks.

french:

i've been trying to make sure we do french at least 3 times a week, and we managed to fit a french lesson 4 times this week (we were out and about more than usual this week, and that pimsleur audio cd really came in handy).  some new and old words/phrases that stood out this week include j'e vais bien, comment allez-vous?, tres bien, chaud, merci, bonjour, quest-ce que c'est?

nature walk:

i kept lessons short on thursday, and we spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon exploring volunteer park.  there was some drizzling involved in our stroll, but the kids were totally excited about it because they got to use their umbrellas (which the boys sometimes turned into weapons *ahem*).  the park is quite big, with plenty of places to explore.  i will have to save a more detailed post about volunteer park for next time.

we also took some time to check out the park's conservatory, modeled after a victorian area glass greenhouse.  the building reminded us of the book misss rumphius, which is currently one of the children's favorite books (it was one of mine when i was a kid).  it was actually really neat to come home and look at the illustration of the conservatory in miss rumphius, after experiencing a real-life conservatory.

inside the conservatory, we had the opportunity to observe plants that aren't commonly seen here in the PNW - many unique, tropical plants that thrive best on year-round warm, humid conditions.

it was an excellent nature day.  sometimes, all we need to refresh us is some good, quality time outside, with freedom to explore, run, and experience at your own pace.  i'm glad we played hookie that day!

9.01.2014

24 months

obviously, i'm super late in posting this.  sorry, baby girl!  sometimes, being the 5th child means you have to deal with delays.

to our dearest baby, baby girl,

on august 6 you turned 2 years old. it's so hard to imagine that 2 years have past since you were a teeny-tiny little thing.  i look at you know, with your adorable, chubby legs, and i can't believe that at one point you were light as a feather in my arms.

your brothers and sister were SO excited to celebrate your birthday.  emma had spent a few weeks preparing for the celebration by making many, little gifts, just for you.  did you know you are loved tremendously by them?

you have changed and developed so much in the past year.  you learned to walk, shortly after we moved into our house in seattle. you learned to gallop (which is SO cute, by the way), and put on a dance show.  and then there was the talking.  i mean, you already said a few words here and there by the time you were one, but this was just a word explosion.  BAM!  so much chatter.  i really enjoy observing you and your siblings converse with each other.

you don't like being left out of the group, and strive to keep up with the bigger kids.  you're sweet and kind, but full of sass when you want to be. it's pretty clear when you get an answer you don't want to hear.  i can see that you may possess a decent mix of stubbornness and determination...qualities that may prove to be helpful in the future.  right?

i love that you still love to snuggle and cuddle with me (though not as frequent), with that thumb in your mouth.  always with that thumb in your mouth. but it's so cute!  you even like to "share" your thumb with people.  it's the sweetest thing.

we hope that you felt loved on your special day, because you are loved.  we're so glad we can be your mommy and daddy, and we're looking forward to seeing how you will grow.

happy birthday!  we love you so very much!

love,

mommy and daddy

wordless wednesday :: my baby forever

this is my baby.  my baby who is walking and talking and getting more independent each day.

*sniff*

i'm ready and not ready for this transition from baby to toddler.  okay, who am i kidding? she's already in full blown toddlerhood.  i'm just in denial.

baby's birthday celebration

we had a lovely, low-key first birthday celebration for our little lani.

we made sure to start the celebration the weekend before her birthday since daddy wouldn't be around for her actual birthday. aaron and i figured out that lani wanted thai food for her birthday meal so we went out to a thai restaurant (we have these special skills that tell us exactly what our kids are thinking, no matter how old they are).

after a full tummy, the birthday girl got to open her present from us.  nothing beats a vintage baby book (it was such a great find!).

big sister also made her a little gift basket full pretty, hand-colored, choke-able, little rocks.  perfect for baby!

on her actual birthday, we celebrated with more birthday singing, birthday presents and birthday brownie.  she had lots of excellent helpers when it came time to open presents.

and i think she thoroughly enjoyed her brownie.
i think she felt pretty loved.  thanks everybody!

my dearest lani,

i can't believe today we celebrate your 1st birthday! it has been an exciting and adventurous year, and you have just taken it all in stride.

it was love at first sight when i first met you. i felt like a first-time parent all over again, totally in awe with everything about you. from little newborn hands and feet to your sweet, newborn smell i couldn't get enough of you.

it has been a joy watching you grow, learn and discover things on your own. and those smiles always brighten up my day.one of my favorite things is to watch you and your siblings interact.  they are so sweet to you, and you absolutely love being around them.

i'm so thankful that i get to be your mommy, and i love you so, so much that my heart sometimes aches just thinking about it. i hope you will feel loved today (and everyday), and i can't wait to see what God has in store for you in the years to come.

happy birthday, leilani!

love,

mommy (and daddy, ty, emma, gibson and cash)

oh baby :: our wee baby lani

tomorrow our youngest turns 1.  she is the last of 5, and will forever be our baby. and what better way to kick off her 1st birthday than to share the story of her birth?  it's been a year so some things are a little hazy, but i'm sure you won't mind if i skip some of the details, right?

*****

monday morning, august 6, 2012, started off like any other monday: breakfast time followed by rounding up the crew for my visit with my midwife, colleen.  i was at 38 weeks and had been seeing her on a weekly basis for the past couple of weeks because of my SUA.

i think that visit was the official kick off to my labor.  you can read some of the details from that day here, because i was crazy and decided to post something when i should be preparing for a birth.

anyway, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. there was nothing but my water leaking.  obviously, i blogged that day, washed the car seat cover and did other usual stuff (i think...i can't remember).

at around 5:30 p.m. i was greeted by a wonderful contraction.  hello!  at that point, i had a feeling we were probably going to have a baby that night.  it was a good thing colleen had given me her mobile number (she must have known i was going to go into labor that night) so that i could get in touch with her as soon as labor started.  she knew how much i had wanted to try a water birth (i had planned for one for the both boys, but didn't get to), so she wanted to make sure she got to the hospital early enough to make sure the tub was all ready for me once i got there.

for once i didn't wait to call until i was having contractions every 5 minutes.  i think i must have called colleen after we put the kiddos in bed probably around 8 p.m. at that time, contractions were still not painful, but i was definitely sure we would be meeting our baby that night. even though the contractions were still about 10-15 minutes apart, colleen decided to head to the hospital to get my tub ready.  i have to say that i'm very thankful to have had a very intuitive and attentive midwife.  she just knew there was no chance in labor stalling with me, and getting my room and tub ready early was pretty much the only way i was going to experience my waterbirth :).

i can't remember all the specifics between the phone call and the time we left for the hospital, but i knew we left around 10:30 p.m. because we had to wait for plan A-1 to take into effect (a.k.a. our super, awesome friend ami who has been plan A-1 since Gibson's pregnancy, but we never had to initiate it until now).  as we waited for ami to come over, i remember the contractions starting to make me grimace.  my sweet husband was very helpful in distracting me when i needed to be distracted, and provided silent support when i just needed to focus. it's funny that this time around, i didn't feel nervous at all about laboring or delivery (even with the possible risks related to the SUA).  God had really given me peace about the whole situation.

we got to the hospital at 11:00 p.m. and began the check-in process at the ER.  when one of the gals at the front-desk heard that my contractions were about 5-6 minutes apart and that this was my 4th child, she decided we didn't need to check-in and rushed us up to our room.  her words: "i'm not about to deal with a birth in the ER!"  i'm so glad, because i wouldn't want to do that either.

everything was ready to go once we arrived to the room.  all i had to do was change.  SO awesome!  i had to go through the usual hospital protocol of being hooked up to the fetal monitoring machine for 15 minutes, but after time was up it was taken off.  man, being stuck in that bed trying to go through your contractions, even if it was just for 15 minutes, was brutal.  i was very relieved when i could finally move around.

while i wasn't crying like a baby (ha!) during the contractions, they did require more from me in order to manage the pain compared to the other 3 births.  we skipped the hep-loc, because colleen is awesome that way.  just kidding.  but seriously, she told the attending nurse that i didn't need it since we wouldn't have enough time anyway.  haha. speaking of the attending nurse, she told me she was a doula before she became a nurse.  how cool is that?  last time i was in with cash, i had a nurse who gave birth naturally to all 6 of her kids.  this time around, i have a former doula??  God has perfect timing.

i was able to push on my own timing again like last time.  i pushed once on the bed.  then colleen told me that if i wanted a waterbirth i'd better get into the tub, because she had a feeling that on the next push the baby will be making her appearance.

walking to the tub felt like the longest walk ev.er. my brain was trying to tell my body to walk faster, but those dang contractions slow you down, don't they?

the tub was fantastic.  warm and soothing.  throw in the dimmed lights, and you couldn't help but feel more relaxed.  even though my contractions were painful, the warmth and the bouyancy from the water helped a lot.  and once the contraction was over, i felt even more relaxed in the tub, and didn't feel anxious about how the next one would feel.  i don't even remember how frequent they were coming, although i only had maybe a couple more contractions before i was ready to push again.

on the second push, which was in the water, i could feel lani's little head.  being in the tub by yourself, and being consciously aware that you're about to meet your baby was crazy, out-of-this-world. i vaguely heard colleen's words as she coached me through pushing her head out and how to catch her in my arms.

i saw her come out and caught her in my arms. i think that was one of the craziest feelings ever!  our little leilani juliati was born 18 minutes after we checked into the hospital. in the water.  my little mermaid. and oh she was so tiny and precious and perfect in every way.  what an overwhelming feeling it all was...to be involved in the whole process of delivering the baby.  one moment i was watching her make her entrance, and the next moment i was holding her close to me with the warm water surrounding us. i have to say, i am glad i was able to experience the waterbirth. and seriously...catching your own baby?  that's just crazy pants!  but it was awesome!

and the best part was that the peaceful bonding moment between us and our new baby didn't end right after birth.  colleen and the nurse were very respectful of our space.  i felt i had enough time to just take in my newborn baby before we cut the cord, and we had plenty of skin-to-skin time before they took her weight and length.  thinking back on it now, it seemed like everything was kinda chill and low-key after she was born.  nothing felt rushed.  everything was just at the right time.

i'm thankful that God met this funny desire of mine to have a waterbirth.  He didn't have to, and i would have been ok with that.  but He did and i'm so grateful for the experience.  it was a great reminder of His perfect design...everything from the pregnancy to the birth was perfectly planned and engineered by Him.  every ache and discomfort in my hips as the due date drew closer and closer, every painful contraction, the instincts in my body kicking in as birth was happening...all perfectly designed by Him.

but i'm most thankful for the precious little bundle that he gave us that day, and for the opportunity to be a mommy and daddy to another sweet baby.

7.09.2013

11 months

happy 11 months my sweet girl!

okay.  so mommy is a few days late in writing this to you, but this is the first night since you turned 11 months that i've been able to sit quietly and think about what to say.

it's funny how in just a short month you have added many more new skills. now that you're mobile, you like exploring and sitting still is no longer an option.  you are usually all smiles, and have gotten quite chatty, saying your mamamamas and papapapapas quite well.

we had a great independence day weekend with family, and i think you enjoyed seeing everyone.  i know that you prefer having people close by when you play, so having a full house was probably quite enjoyable for you.

you are mastering your pulling up to standing skills, and i have even caught you cruising a little bit.  how exciting!  i'm sure that before long you'll be cruising along all the furniture grabbing at anything within arms reach.

you know your siblings quite well, and always greet them with a big smile and some feet kicking.  and they are the sweetest to you.  all of them.  even baby cash.  it's ridiculously cute watching them love on you.

speaking of feet kicking, that is something you do when you have your eye on some food.  that's how i know you're ready to eat.  you see food and your legs immediately begin to kick.  it's seriously the cutest thing.

and here's the funny thing about your eating...you eat SO much food, but for some reason you are still petite.  where do you hide those calories?  one of my favorite things about you eating your food is the sound you make while your chowing down.  talk about being satisfied with your meal!

you are growing so quickly, and i'm beginning to see your own personality develop. i love your slobbery kisses, little giggles, sweet smiles and snuggles.  you know, i don't know if i'm quite ready for you to be one next month.  can't you stay a baby for a little bit longer?

*sigh*

we love you so much, my little princess baby!

mommy

6.11.2013

10 months

dearest little peanut,

first off, i meant to write you a little something when you turned 8 months, but we were in the midst of traveling cross-country so i didn't do it. second, i'm almost a week late in writing your 10 month note.

it's been 2 months since we left our old home in cleveland, and you have settled in quite well at ibu and grandpa's house.  it didn't take long for you to get comfortable in your new surroundings at all.

you have changed so much in 4 months. the biggest thing: mobility.  you do almost the same belly crawl that your brothers did when they were your age, and it's so cute to see you moving around and pull up on stuff.

since you started on table foods a month ago, you're not as teeny as before.  at least you can wear 9 month clothing now!  okay, it's a little loose, but i think it counts.

speaking of food, did i mention you love to eat?  every time someone pulls out a snack, or you hear the rustling of a plastic bag, your feet begin to kick excitedly and your eyes get that hyper-focused-stare-down look at whatever edible item is being displayed in front of you.  you sure can put a lot away for a wee peanut!

some of the sweetest things i've been enjoying from you these past 4 months: squeals, giggles, baby chatter, squishy-grin face, ticklish neck, cuddles, sloberry kisses, the excited kicking you do right before you nurse, climbing on your brothers, smiles, birdie mouth, little hands, and little toes.

i love you my sweet, little princess!  happy 10 months to you!

love,

mommy

2.07.2013

6 months

dear baby peanut,

yesterday you turned 6 months, and i don't think i was quite ready for it.  yet at the same time i was.  i know...that doesn't make any sense at all, but it does in my head.

i wasn't quite ready for you being half a year old, because i have really been enjoying you being a sweet baby.  baby coos, baby smiles, baby hands, baby smells, baby feet, baby snuggles.  i love it, love it, love it.  feeling like you are going to forever be the youngest in the family, i kinda want to hang on (REALLY TIGHT) to all the baby-ness.

but at the same time, i am ready to see you grow and grow.  sometimes i like to imagine you toddling around after your big brothers and sister, or doing girl time with me and emma, or date time with your daddy...it brings a smile to my face.

you have gotten more vocal these past few weeks filling the room with lots of high pitch squealing.  one of my favorite things you've been doing lately is reaching for my face and squeezing my lips or my cheek between your baby fingers.  it's actually kind of painful when i have forgotten to trim your fingernails, but it's so stinkin' adorable i am more than willing to put up with the pain.

and speaking of those baby fingers, you are getting quite adept at putting a couple of them in your mouth to suck on.  it seems to make you quite happy when you manage to do that.  sometimes it even helps you fall asleep.  now all you need to do is figure out how to do that more often, and i'm quite certain your napping habits would improve.

remember that you are loved, my little peanut.  mommy and daddy love you so very much, and it's evident from the attention you get that your siblings love you just as much as we do.

love,
mommy

wordless wednesday::littlest

the youngest of 5 is 6 months today.  seriously?  bitter.sweet.

5 months

my sweet girl,

okay, i admit i skipped your 4 month post.  december was a bit crazy so operation prioritize was in effect. sadly, i never got around to doing your 4 month letter and now here we are in january and you're 5 months already.

you continue to be a petite little miss, making your own curve in the weight department.  that's okay.

you have managed to roll over quite a few times and only just today did i finally witness you in action.  i wonder if that's why you've been getting up at night more frequently?  no matter.  i do enjoy having you close, although i would appreciate another 6 hour stretch or two like the one you gave me a month ago.

i love listening to your baby coos, and seeing the sweet smiles you give me.  your brothers and sister often rush up to comfort you when they start hearing your cries.  i love that.

while i'm trying to enjoy the little moments, sometimes i can't help thinking ahead to when you begin to toddle around and mommy, emma and you can all go do a girls outing together.  doesn't that sound fun?  emma is already talking about sharing a room with you when you're old enough.  she is so sweet.

well, baby, you are crying for me right now so i must tend to you.  i love your sweet face, and everything about you (even your little sticky-out ears)!

love,
mommy

3 months

my dear baby girl,

have i told you how sweet you are?

have i told you how i love having you nuzzled right next to me in bed and seeing your cute face when i wake up in the morning?

i love looking at your little fingers and toes.  this time next year they wont be so little anymore.

you are growing slowly but surely, weighing in at 8.1 lbs at your weight check last week.  you know your brother was about that much when he was born.  it's funny to think about it.

your smiles and coos are more frequent (unless you're hungry, sleepy or both), and i still can't stop smothering your sweet little face with kisses.

one of my most favorite things is watching the bond and love that grows between you and your siblings.  and your cash-cash would literally smother you with hugs, kisses and drool if he could.

i'm thankful for having you here with me.  i'm thankful that i have the opportunity to be your mama, and that you have a daddy, brothers and a sister that love you so, SO much.

kisses, love!

2 months

happy 2 months, my little dear.

you are truly the peanut in the family.  still so small, you just recently grew into your newborn clothes.

you've given us smiles and a few coos, and your short, quiet-alert moments usually turn into a time when your brothers and sister shower you with attention.  even baby cash (who i guess is not really a baby anymore), loves to cover you with kisses (and drool).

right now, your most favorite place is close to mama.  and i'm not complaining, because soon enough that will be a distant memory for you.

thinking about the fact that you are in our lives is still a bit surreal at times, since you were a sweet surprise to us all.  now, it's hard to imagine life without you.

i love you so much i could smother you with hugs and kisses and eat you all up.

8.14.2012

ta-da!!!

i admit, it's been rather quiet around here since my last post.  especially after mentioning the possibility of welcoming our new baby within the next 24 hours or so after the posting.

there is good reason for that, i promise!

about 7 hours after i wrote that last post we met our sweet baby girl for the first time.

leilani juliati was born august 6 at 11:18 p.m. in the water.  weighing in at 6 lbs 6 oz. and 19 inches long, she was the smallest out of the 4.

the birth experience was, well...fast.  but birthing in the water was pretty cool.  i will have to save her birth story for another post.

we went home wednesday but baby girl and i were back in the hospital thursday night to treat her jaundice.  i'm fairly certain that the cause is that anti-E i developed, since she is baby #3 that has had to undergo the tanning bed.

we didn't get discharged until saturday morning so needless to say i haven't had much of  chance to post pictures of her sweet face.

but now we're home, transitioning to a life with a new baby yet again.  we are enjoying her adorable face and oooh that newborn smell!  i love it.
