do something: weekend sept. 16 - 18

it's back!  i know it has been quite a long while since i posted a list of cool, local, non-mall activities around town.  but that doesn't mean there hasn't been anything going on.  did you know that there's always something going on in this city?  at least to me.

well, i figure i would pick a weekend to start this series back up where there would be 5 gazillion things going on.  sound good?  here are some of the things we think may be worth checking out...

tonight is the kick-off to cleveland's annual ingenuity fest, a festival held at the detroit-shoreway bridge that blends art and technology together.  if you've never been, it is worth checking out. seriously!  from the past couple of years that we've attended, there have always been very interesting and unique art exhibits (some are even interactive).  the kids have always enjoyed going, and we're hoping to find time this weekend to check it out.  the event goes from 5 p.m. - 1 a.m. friday, 12 p.m. - 1 a.m. saturday and 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. sunday.  and...it's FREE!!  be sure to check their website for a schedule of events.

the 13th annual tremont arts and cultural festival starts this day from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and then sunday from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. at lincoln park.  we've actually never been to this event before, and it's not because we don't want to.  it seems that there's always a conflict with time each time we want to go.  there looks to be a great line up of performers including some dance (!!!) from antaeus dance and morrisondance, resident dance companies in the ohio city/tremont neighborhood.  admission is free, but parking will probably be tricky.  if you can carpool, do it.  if you can bus, do it.  if you decide to drive, be prepared to walk.

the madison avenue art walk in lakewood will be going on from 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. if you are in the area, be sure to check out some of the local shops on madison, including crafty goodness and breakneck gallery (newly opened), which will be featuring local art, and decorate the sidewalk with your very own chalk art!

if you have ever want to go back in time and get a taste of what the early ohio settlers experienced then the cedar valley settlers celebration and music festival is for you!  actually, even if you're not really into historical experiences like that, i would still highly recommend going.  we went last year, though only for the tail end of the festival.  but even the half-hour we spent was chalk full of interesting stuff!  emma had fun pounding corn into flour and even though ty didn't admit it, i think he had a good time making those buckeye bolos!  come out to the rocky river reservation from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and enjoy a little taste of history and the outdoors!

if you love oysters like i do then you won't want to miss the 1st annual oyster festival held at stone mad pub in tremont.  this event takes place from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. with live music from bands including the boys from county hell (if you like the pogues then you will enjoy these guys), an oyster shucking contest and some good, ol' oysters to eat to your hearts content.  yum!

i feel like i don't want to miss any of these events, but alas we will most likely have to pick and choose considering my cane-strutting, gimpy husband.  though i wonder if target would be willing to lend us one of those electric carts for the weekend? then we might just be in business...

have a fantastic, cleveland weekend!

*oh, and if you want to find out what else is going on around town check out this post from unmiserable cleveland.  didn't i tell you there's 5 gazillion things going on this weekend?

wordless wednesday::death by squirrel

remember the avocado seed?

we planted it with high hopes of successful growth...

then 2 days later...
lesson: keep avocado seedling inside to avoid death by squirrel.

when life gives you lemons...

why is it when something crappy happens, there's 2 or 3 or more crappy/pain-in-the-butt things that happen soon after?  they always comes in huge waves, so that it makes one big happy crappy party.

at least that's the case for me.

then it seems like 5 million different things need to be addressed, fixed, attended to, etc. in addition to the day-to-day i'm supposed to stay on top of, to the point where i could easily get overwhelmed and let the waves overtake me.

when this happens there are 2 things i could do.

1. shut down. a.k.a. ignore all the problems, hide, shopping therapy, lock myself up in a room and never come out until the 2nd coming, turn to alcohol, turn to drugs, turn to some other sort of addiction, run away, relocate and start a new identity...

2. take the bull by the horns and roll with it. a.k.a. trust that God is in control of the situation and seek his wisdom, strength, grace and mercy to help me get through it.

i know option 1 is much easier.  i've even chosen it a few times.  it sure makes the problem(s) disappear, but they never really go away, do they?  eventually it comes back and you're faced with the decision (again) to choose between option 1 and option 2.

so, the past few months have been a doozy.  i really want to keep this blog updated, and not just with photos but with actual written content as well.  but life is taking over and it's taking over now.  there's just been a lot going on (you know that happy crappy party i mentioned, earlier?) that requires a lot of me not being on the computer.  and the times i have to myself have primarily been used to catch up on daily obligations that i'm falling behind on.  as a result, by the time i'm actually "done" for the day, i'm REALLY done.  my brain and my body is maxed out, and my soft bed lures me in before i can even say "facebook."

i'm not abandoning this blog.  once the "dust settles," my goal is to get back on a regular posting schedule, but at this point the posts will seem a bit more sporadic. a little here, a lot there, or none at all for a few weeks.

i just have to tend to a few things...so that the waves don't end up overtaking me.
